Matthew selectively picks which wives to list. Four, Tamar (who tricked her father-in-law, Judah, into sleeping with her), and Bathsheba (who committed adultery with David) are gentiles. [2] Arni and Admin are listed in Luke but not in some manuscripts. [3] Names in 1 Chronicles omitted by Matthew. There have been several reasons suggested including: 1. Differences in the Greek Translation of the Bible from which Matthew took his lists. 2. The omitted kings were wicked, accursed or assassinated. 3. A copyist's error. 4. It allowed him to have fourteen generations, a multiple of the perfect number 7, in each of 3 groups. [4] The 4 names - Joseph, Judah, Simeon and Levi are all names of sons of Jacob. [5] Matthew changed Asa to Asaph, a psalmist and Amos to Amon, a prophet. (See possible explanation in introduction) [6] Israel splits into the Southern Kingdom (Judah) Including Jerusalem and the area south. (Tribes of Judah & Benjamin) and the Northern Kingdom (Israel) (other 10 tribes). Asa through Jeconiah were all kings of Judah. [7] Sarna "Israel in Egypt" and the NIV bible place the Exodus at around 1440 (supported by Kings 6:1 and Judges 11:26) and Solomn's Temple at abt. 960. Ussher proposes dates of 1491 and 1012 respectively. Others propose a date of 1280 for the Exodus based on archaeological evidence that Egyptian cities Pithom and Raamses were rebuilt in the 13th century, probably with Israelite labor.
[8] Godet9, Lange10, and many others take the ground that Luke gives the
genealogy of Mary and Mary was Heli's daughter. Mary's name was omitted
because "ancient sentiment did not comport with the mention of the
mother as the genealogical link". GODET Frederick, A Commentary On The Gospel Of St Luke (2 vols), 1957, trans. from 2nd French ed. by E. W. Shalders, T. & T.
