Forbes Holten Norris, MD, 1928-1993

After sustaining a major hip injury in childhood, he spent long periods in body casts confined to bed. It was during this time that he discovered his love for music. His interest in medicine also began as a result of his hip injury and led him to study Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in the early 1950's at the National Institutes of Health. His interest in neuromuscular problems became his life's devotion and led to his pioneering work in ALS research and management, as well as his advocacy of patient's rights. His work in developing aggressive clinical treatment for ALS may be his greatest legacy. His compassionate concern gave direction for care and offered hope and dignity in a seemingly hopeless disease.

Dr. Norris' commitment to care of ALS patients and ALS research continues today at California Pacific's
