Charles and his brother John came to California around 1846 where they fought with Fremont's Army in the Mexican War.

Gard Meddaugh states in his history at home.pacbell.net/gardm/c_j_gard.html that:

"The best history I have heard is that Charles and John Gard left Missouri as drovers with the Grigsby-Ide party in 1845; drovers essentially came with the oxen and were not often mentioned in party lists."

"Charles and John were assigned to "Capt. Swift's Co. C, Mt. Riflemen", the California Mounted Battalion commanded by Granville Swift. Swift came to Oregon in 1843 and then to California with the group of Kelseys who originally went to Oregon when the Bidwell-Bartleson party came to California in 1841. He was then employed as a hunter by Sutter at his fort. Swift was a grandnephew of Daniel Boone and his family knew the Hudsons in Missouri.

Charles and John went back to Missouri in 1848 and may have brought more family members back with them. He went back to Missouri again probaly in 1854 and helped bring the Webb family back.

He received a land grant in Stockton in payment for Army Services.

He died in 1876 from injuries received after being stepped on by a horse while he was sleeping camped out on a return trip from Morgan Valley.
